Nシリーズ第4弾にあたるN-WGNを先行公開し、ますます存在感を強めたホンダの軽。次なる一手として、熾烈な争いを繰り広げる低燃費競争に打って出ることになりそうだ

JC08モード35.0km/Lが目標

スズキとダイハツの2強から、ホンダを交えた3強時代へと突入した軽自動車業界。そんな中、ダイハツ ミラe:S（JC08モード燃費33.4km/L）とスズキ アルトECO（同33km/L）に端を発する燃費競争にホンダも本格参戦するという。

背景として、系列ディーラーや社内営業から「他社が低燃費を数字でアピールしているのに、当社だけそれがないのがはつらい」という突き上げがあったものと予測される。結果、2014年半ばに発売が計画されている新型軽自動車では、JC08モード燃費35km/L超が目指されているという。

ダイハツのエンジニアが言うには、35km/Lという数値自体は「開発中の技術をすべて使えば不可能ではない」という。ただ、それ以上となるとなんらかの飛び道具が必要だ。

以前、本田技術研究所の首脳は、軽自動車への搭載を視野に、IMA（ホンダのハイブリッド機構）を小型化していることを明かしている。35km/L超を目指すならば、軽自動車の販売価格が上昇している昨今、新型軽自動車のトップグレードとしてハイブリッドもありうる。

気になるエクステリアはまだ想像の域を出ない。しかし、キャビンが広く見える新型フィットをギュッと凝縮したような“フィットの弟分”というルックスは十分に考えられる。

車名もまだ判明していないが、N-BOXと同じセンタータンクレイアウトの車なので、Nシリーズを名乗ることは間違いない。燃費一辺倒でなく、ストレスなく走れるという意味を込め、「N-FREE」になるという噂だ。
